By admin • Facts and Trivia • 3 Apr 2012

The Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912 after a collision with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City.  The ship carried 2,224 people and out of these 1,154 people died in what is known as one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.

Some of the most elite people in the world of that time, were travelling on that ship, including more than a thousand emigrants from  Ireland, Great Britain, Scandinavia and nearby countries.  The ship had the world when it came to luxury and comfort. Check out the rooms in Titanic, they included swimming pools, high class restaurants,  Turkish bath-houses and opulent cabins.  The safety features in the form of watertight compartments and doors were good enough but the ship was not backed up  with enough lifeboats to tide over an emergency situation. The lifeboats were capable enough to carry only 1, 178 people.
